liché statements are so hard to
     avoid with the incredibly huge
number of us creating by means of
personal artistic endeavors. Many of us
create for the same reasons. Yet, I so
very much want you to know that my
pursuits are heartfelt on many levels.
When I first discovered I could
actually draw fairly well, I was in the
fifth grade. I remember seeing another
student copy drawings of fashion
illustrations from a newspaper, and
wondered if I could too. Mostly the
lines inspired me, and I noticed how I
felt when I looked at them. That's
where the idea of becoming an artist
began and almost ended.
Like so many others, I was told I
couldn't make a living at it. I was
young, and let go of the idea; but did
continue to do some drawing and
painting - mostly windows for the
family during the holidays.
Much later, I studied Fine Art and
Design at Cornish College of the Arts
where doors were opened that I never
could have imagined otherwise.
After I graduated from Cornish, I
learned printing production in a visual
communications class at a community
college; and I learned most about
painting skills after graduation, and I
still learn with each painting.
I decided to study graphic design as
a way of learning about style and the
elements of visual communications. In
this process, I also learned much about
marketing, and that creativity comes
through many disciplines.

Graphic design serves me well to earn an
income, help me build confidence for
other artistic interests, and I enjoy the
challenge of helping others to realize their
vision.
As life progressed I found that I
always returned to drawing and painting
when I needed to 'ground' myself, and
have a stronger sense of identity. I will
probably ponder this more deeply
someday.
    My favorite painting subject has
always been people, and I will often just
draw and make up faces. This gives me a
chuckle. It may sound odd when I say
that I often pause, and take a moment to
wonder if God himself has a similar
feeling when he sees how each of his
creations turns out...making each of us in
his image!
I also enjoy still life, and landscape
painting. Here too, there is so much to
learn...what and how nature teaches
about color and composition. Over time
we begin to see differently, too…
I read a book recently about how
every thing we do should be offered as an
act of worship to God. I am still working
on this idea, but find it fitting at least
when I am painting.

I do not know where my journey with
the creative arts will take me in the
future, but I am so grateful to have this
as part of my tool kit for living today...
