Knitting Class Syllabus Types of Yarns: Whenever possible try to buy the yarn stated in the pattern. Always buy a yarn that is the same weight as that given in the pattern. Check that the gauge of both yarns is the same. When substituting a different fiber, be aware of the design. A cable pattern knitted in cotton when worked in wool will pull in because of the greater elasticity of the yarn and so the fabric will become narrower; this will alter the proportions of the garment. Check the yardage of the yarn. Yarns that weigh the same may have different lengths in the ball or hank, so you may need to buy more or less yarn. Buying Yarn: The yarn will carry all the essential information you need a to gauge, needle size, weight and yardage. It will also have a dye lot. Buy all the yarn you will need for a project at the same time. Check the yarn label for washing instructions.
